Harry, Hi....

A good chance that although mature the wine is probably still drinking nicely. Worth trying if the price is right.

Yarden, Viognier, 2005: Aged partly in barriques, partly in stainless steel and reflecting a gentle hand with spicy wood. Lively gold in color, full-bodied, with nectarines, peaches, kiwis and hints of citrus that play nicely on the palate together with aromas and flavors of spring flowers. Drink up. Score 90. K

Agreed; the wine is fully mature but still very tasty. Certainly stil has most of the aromatics, just less of the zip of the newer releases. Great find!

I actually just got my order of Yarden Syrah 2005. If anyone is interested in a great deal Little Bros Wine is selling it for $9.99 and they have it in stock now. I got my order the morning after it shipped out. Here is the link - http://www.littlebroswine.com/sku25039.html

Just placed my order - thanks for the heads up. And just so you all know, you get a 15% discount on top of that price if you order a case. Funny that this comes up one day after a discussion about the lack of popularity of syrah in the US.

Daniel, it seems that GHW has a lot of syrah vineyards coming on line, or maturing, recently - do you know if other Israeli wineries have been planting a lot of syrah, and if Israeli syrah production is increasing on the whole?

Thanks,
Allen

Allen, Hi....

Indeed a good deal of Syrah/Shiraz is coming on line these days in Israeli vineyards and it is clear that such plantings are taking place on behalf of large and small wineries. Indeed Syrah/Shiraz is increasing in proportion to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and may indeed may play an increasing role in future wines within Israel. On the other hand, I doubt that Israel is about to become the Rhone of the Middle-East. That is to say, while Syrah/Shiraz is on the ascendant, there is no sign (nor need there be such a sign) that those will replace other grapes in their level of acceptance.

I and several others have also responded in broader terms to this question at the Syrah/Shiraz thread at viewtopic.php?f=29&t=32761

Dammit...you guys are doing me harm!!!!! My next visit to the USA will almost certainly have to be extended by two-three days in order for me to visit some of the Brooklyn-located wine shops and restaurants to which you so often refer. Considering my early background, that shall indeed be a "sentimental journey".

Harry,

They must've changed it yesterday bec. my order was filled three days ago at 9.99 a bottle. I guess they realized it was too cheap.
